The Allyson Whitney Foundation gives financial grants directly to young adults aged 16 to 36 with rare cancers, and since their age range starts at 16, this includes teens who are minors dealing with a cancer diagnosis.Their main program is the Life Interrupted Grant, which awards between $500 and $1,500 per person. These grants are flexible and can cover unpaid or current medical bills, rent, utilities, car insurance, health insurance premiums, travel expenses related to treatment, integrative therapies, and medical hairpieces like wigs.
They also offer IVF start-up coverage including egg retrieval and sperm banking within a 6-month window, which is a huge deal for teens and young adults whose fertility may be at risk from chemo or radiation. Grants can be paid directly to the patient and family or sent directly to a landlord or medical provider. To qualify, the patient must be between 16 and 36 years old, a U.S. citizen, and diagnosed with a rare cancer.
Almost all young adult cancers qualify as rare. Breast cancer in your 20s is considered rare by their standards.
The patient must be in active treatment or within 10 months of finishing. Here is the important part: you cannot request an application yourself. A doctor, oncology social worker, or patient navigator at your facility has to email 📧 grants@allysonwhitney.org during an open enrollment period to request the application on your behalf.
AWF does not maintain a waitlist, so you need to check their website at allysonwhitney.org/grants for current open enrollment dates. Once the application is sent, the patient fills out their portion and submits all required documents together.
Missing paperwork means your application will not be reviewed.Beyond grants, AWF also delivers HOPE Comfort Bags filled with essentials to oncology suites in New York, Florida, and California, and they fund oncofertility support programs to help young patients preserve fertility before treatment begins.
