Abby's Carts of Courage gives children fighting cancer a brand new wagon to help them get around during their cancer journey. When kids are going through treatment, they often get so tired and weak that walking becomes really hard. Baby strollers don't work because most kids are too heavy for them, but a wagon is perfect.
It gives them a safe way to move around the hospital or at home when they just don't have the energy to walk. But it's not just a wagon. Each one comes filled with comfort items picked specially for that child to help keep their mind off treatment and lift their spirits.
The program delivers these wagons directly to kids with cancer in Maryland, DC, and Virginia. Families can work with their child's hospital or child life specialist to request a wagon, and there's absolutely no cost to the family. The program started because of a little girl named Abby who understood how much a wagon could mean to a child going through cancer treatment.
Now the program has delivered over 127 wagons to kids fighting cancer. You can sponsor a child by becoming an Abby's Angel, which covers the cost of a wagon and all the goodies to fill it. Everything is coordinated through Respite Retreats staff who purchase the wagon, fill it with age-appropriate comfort items, and deliver it to the child.
